Trends in Substance Abuse is the Focus of March Families Talking

March Families Talking Program Get your family talking about the latest trends in the illegal drug market.  Join the Neptune Municipal Alliance to Prevent Alcoholism and Drug Abuse on Tuesday, March 23, 6-8pm, at the Neptune Midtown Community School for this month's Families Talking workshop, a warm dinner, a chance at a door prize, and some tips to help you talk about substance abuse with your family.

Bring the whole family out for an informative evening-dinner, open gym for basketball, and childcare are all provided free of charge as part of the program.  The facilitator will be Barbara Sprechman with Prevention First.

Dinner will be served at 6pm, followed by the workshop and time for follow up discussion.  On site childcare will also be provided, in a room full of toys and games; and the gym will be open, so bring your basketball or jump rope.

The Neptune Municipal Alliance to Prevent Alcoholism and Drug Abuse is offering this program as part of a series of nine family-oriented workshops throughout 2010.  These Workshop topics include: Making, Breaking, & Revising Rules, Internet Safety, Trends in Substance Abuse, Why Play & Nature Matter in Raising a Healthy Child, Understanding Teen Attitudes, 10 Steps to Keeping Your Kids Drug Free, Managing Your Child's Anger, Safe Dating Tips and Boundaries for Parents and Teens, and DWI's, "What Happens After the Ticket?"

Check out the billboard!

In recognition of December as Drunk & Drugged Driving Awareness Month, Neptune Peer Leadership and the Neptune Municipal Alliance to Prevent Alcoholism & Drug Abuse teamed up for a billboard promoting a message to the public to not drink and drive.

The Peer Leaders provided the artwork for the billboard and the Alliance paid to rent the billboard space.  The Peer Leaders also had smaller boards made to post around Neptune High School.

Be sure to drive by the billboard on Hwy 35 North just below the Asbury Park Circle!

Proclamation Given at Candlelight Vigil

Nick Larosa and Abigail Sanford received a Proclamation from the Neptune Township Committee Monday evening November 23 rd at the Neptune High School.

Neptune Police Commissioner and Township Committeeman, Randy Bishop presented the proclamation commending the students on their work involving "Drunk Driving Awareness".   Mr Bishop\'s brief remarks focused on the fact that there is "No do over" when it comes to driving impaired.

Despite the cold and rain, a large crowd gathered to participate in the program written, produced and performed by the Neptune High School Peer Leadership Council.  Nick Larosa and Abigail Sanford acted as Emcees representing the Peer Leadership Council.

Also playing an active roll were the Neptune Student Government, the Neptune ROTC Color Guard, the Neptune Board of Education Members, the Neptune Board of Education Administration, the Neptune High School Marching Band, the Neptune Brass Ensemble, along with the Neptune High School Chorus.   Members of the Neptune Community included members of the Emergency Response Services: Police, Fire and EMS.   Short presentations were given by Neptune Police Captain Leather and EMT Molly Berkowitz.

Exciting Cops vs Kids Basketball Fundraiser

The Neptune Township Municipal Alliance to Prevent Alcoholism and Drug Abuse would like to extend a huge thank you to all who helped make the fifth annual Cops vs. Kids basketball game on November 13, 2009 such a success!  The game was fun, and the score couldn't be any closer!

It was a great event-from pre-event sponsorship to the last basket.  After two twenty-minute halves, the score ended at 49-48, in favor of the Cops.  I think I heard the kids say they want a rematch.  The light-hearted interaction lasted throughout the whole game.

The Kids' team (coached by Frank Palumbo with assistance from Datrick Starks and Koran McDaniel) included: Ke'shawn Rice, Jalen Gibson, Tyrell Spencer, Mathias Larazus, James Jordan, Jaison Lewinski, Kadeem Curtis, Jashawn Woods, Euniqha Lott, Hakim Cole, and Darion Moss.

The Cops' team (coached by Mike Zarro) also included: Kaan Williams, Robert Baldwin, Michael Allen, Kevin Shuster, Marcus Alston, Michael Adam, Elena Gonzalez, Calvin Brock, and Shawn Hubbard.

Special thanks go out to: the players; the coaches; the referees; score and time keepers Jan Sotnikoff and Stephanie McEwan; the Neptune High School ROTC Colors and Trick Team and Commander Atkins; Alliance members Rick Matson, Louise Coburn, Yvonne Earley-Proute, and Sherry Sotnikoff who helped work the event; Neptune Athletic Director Vince Ardery and the Neptune Board of Education; and Neptune Police Officer Mike Zarro, who coordinated the Cops and secured sponsorships.

Thanks to all of our event sponsors, including:  Neptune Township Police PBA #74, Neptune Twp FOP #19, Theo's Demolition & Construction Clean-Up, Impact Auto Body, Frank's Automotive Transportation Services, Bruno's Italian Deli, Nagel's, Krenkel's, Allied Fire & Safety, Marriott Residence Inn, Boston's Restaurant, Popeyes, Dunkin Donuts, Midtown Urban Renaissance Corporation (MURC), Neptune High School, Chick-fil-A, the Neptune Municipal Alliance to Prevent Alcoholism and Drug Abuse, and the Neptune Recreation Department.

Thanks to everyone who supported the game, and in turn, helps us spread our prevention message to the community.  Be sure to look for our next Cops vs. Kids fundraiser, as I heard more than one, "Wait until next year!"

Sincerely,

Dawn Thompson, Coordinator, Neptune Municipal Alliance to Prevent Alcoholism and Drug Abuse

Cops vs Kids Softball Game

The Neptune Township Municipal Alliance to Prevent Alcoholism and Drug Abuse would like to extend a huge thank you to all who helped make the fourth annual Cops vs. Kids softball game on June 17, 2009 such a success!  The game was fun, and the laughs were plenty!

It was a great event-from pre-event sponsorship to the last at bat.  The players decided on a seven inning game to beat the threatening weather, and the final score was 18-16, in favor of the Cops; followed by three pick-up innings.  I think I heard the kids say next year they'll practice more before the game.  The light-hearted interaction lasted throughout all 10 innings, with fun had by players on both teams and spectators alike.  New this year was the awarding of the coveted "Prevention Cup" trophy, donated by Randy Willis & First Impressions, which will be housed at the Police Department until next year's game when the Kids will try to steal it away!

The Kids' team (coached by John Fiore and Joel Hubbard) also included: Tyler Torres, Jackie Cella, Rob Green, Rocco Manfre, Jason Weir, Danielle Rust, Andrew Casper, Jayme Narciso, Ron Weir, Owen Rosenthal, Micah Espina, Jai-leen James, Cynthia Estime, Angel Harris, and Manager Kelli Blue.

The Cops' team (coached by Robert Baldwin and Les Borges) also included: Mike Bonnano, Brian Maher, Chris Niskoch, Rich Blaydes, Larry Fisher, Eugene Stewart, Chris McKinley, Ryan Lasch, Mike Acquaviva, and Kaan Williams.

Special thanks go out to: the players, the coaches, Bob Walzer who umpired the game, Tony Richardson who gave the play-by-play commentary and kept score, George Reid who prepped the field, Fred Boenig from Neptune Recreation and Alliance members Rick Matson, Louise Coburn, Yvonne Earley-Proute, Billy Brown, and Sherry and Jan Sotnikoff who helped with the event, Mike Lane who sold hotdogs & fries, Committeewoman Mary Beth Jahn who came out to support the game, and Neptune Police Officer Mike Zarro, who coordinated the Cops and secured sponsorships.

Event sponsors included:  Theo's Demolition & Construction Clean-Up, Impact Auto, Automobile Transportation Services, Bruno's Italian Deli, McDonalds, Dunkin Donuts, Robert Walzer, Jr. from the Independent Softball Association, Randy Willis & First Impressions, Neptune Township Police PBA #74, Neptune Twp FOP #19, Midtown Urban Renaissance Corporation (MURC), the Neptune Municipal Alliance to Prevent Alcoholism and Drug Abuse, and the Neptune Recreation Department.

Thanks to everyone who supported the game, and in turn, help us spread our prevention message to the community.  Be sure to look for our next Cops vs. Kids fundraiser, as I heard more than one, "Wait until next year!"
