NEPTUNE TOWNSHIP PLANS VETERANS’ MEMORIAL PARK
AT FORMER WELSH FARMS SITE
Neptune Township Mayor Kevin B. McMillan is pleased to announce plans for a Veterans’ Memorial Park located at the historic Welsh dairy farm tract on Old Corlies Avenue. "This is a proud day in Neptune when we can have a place such as this park to honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice not only for Neptune for our country as well", the Mayor stated.
The park will honor all servicemen and women from Neptune Township who gave the ultimate sacrifice protecting our country. This section of the site will be a passive park with monuments, flags, trails, paths, flowers, shrubbery and a seating area. Plans are currently under development. Philip D. Huhn, Neptune Township Business Administrator reported that "This is a community project; along with our Veteran's organizations, residents and dedicated staff, we are working together to make this memorial a profound tribute to our fallen heroes."
The conceptual idea for the park was brought to the Township by former Mayor Patricia Monroe and Bernadette Sherman, the mother of Army Sgt. Stephen Sherman, a Neptune resident, who was killed in the Iraq war. She commented, "I would like to say that I am very pleased that the Township has decided to dedicate the park to those who made the ultimate sacrifice. These heroes deserve a place where they will be honored and remembered. I consider it a privilege to be involved in this worthwhile endeavor."
A fund raising committee for the park has been established and a table will be set up at Riverfest on October 1st. Riverfest will be held from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm along South Concourse Avenue from Route 35 to Riley Avenue between Sunsets Restaurant and the Headliner. Additional information about the park will be available at the table including a sign-up for residents wishing to be informed of future information and events. Brick pavers will be available for sale and will be installed in the park.
A wine and cheese party fundraiser is planned for January to kick off the fund raising events.
