Members of the Twp’s Environmental and Shade Tree Commission were joined by volunteers Laura Granelli, Beth Miller and Boy Scout Troop #81 at Volunteer Park on Saturday, April 19 as they gave out approximately 800 seedlings. “The event was very successful as many of the residents were grateful for the opportunity to receive the seedlings at no cost”, stated Chris Bedrosian, Secretary to the Commission. He went on to say that most had damaged trees as well as trees that died due to Superstorm Sandy high winds.
Under the tutelage of Commission Chair, Mindi Arcoleo, Commission members gave advice regarding proper planting techniques and help in deciding which tree (s) were best suited for their property. Thirty trees were given to Midtown Community School for their planting on Thursday, April 24th. Beach Plums were given to Ocean Grove Beautification for use on the dunes.
The seedlings were donated by the New Jersey Tree Recovery Campaign. Partners in the program included NJ State Forestry Services Community Forestry Program & State Forest Nursery, Soil Conservation Districts, Sustainable Jersey, Arbor Day Foundation, BJ’s Wholesale Club and FedEx.
